Abbeylara 1-12 Vs. Fr. Manning Gaels 0-08

In front of a decent crowd in Oliver Lynch Memorial Park, The Abbeylara footballers maintained their 100% record in all competitions last weekend with an important victory over Fr. Manning Gaels in Round 2 of the All County League Division 1.

The team got off to a great start winning a quick free kick which Jason Kelly duly converted and moments later Jason followed up that score with another smart point from play.

Having started sluggishly, the Drumlish team came to life and registered their first score with a point from play but Jason Kelly was on hand again to cancel out that score with yet another point after some powerful approach play from the Abbey midfield. The Gaels continued to press and managed to score 2 more points to bring the sides level at 3 points a piece with a quarter of the game gone.

That phase of good play from Drumlish brought a good response from the Abbey players and they started to impose themselves on the game more and more. The backs began to bring the ball out of defence with purpose and some great passages of play as well as increased pressure saw both corner backs, Arthur O’Conner and Anthony McBrien send over fine scores. Robbie Smyth next took aim and added a 3rd point without reply to make the score 0-6 to 0-3.

The remainder of the first half was a cagey affair with both teams fighting hard for possession to try and gain the upper hand but only a solitary point from Drumlish could be mustered and the teams went in at the break 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of Abbey.

Abbeylara flew out of the traps in the second half much like they did the first by taking the game to Fr. Manning Gaels and registering three quick points in succession through the potent Jason Kelly who scored two of them and the other from the alert Sean Murphy.

The Drumlish team attempted to keep in touch with Abbey with a point of their own but the turning point in the game came when a high ball in around the square broke to the on running Sean Murphy and his quick thinking and slight of foot saw him dispatch a great goal to put Abbeylara 7 points ahead. Fr. Manning Gaels didn’t give up however and continued to make Abbey fight for the win by adding 2 more points.

The final stages of the game saw Abbey further stretch their lead with Robbie Smyth sending another point over the black spot followed by a consolation point from the Gaels. The Abbey team wrapped up the game with 2 good points from the impressive Anhtony McBrien and a 6th point of the game from Jason Kelly to run out winners by 7 points.

The Club would like to thank everyone who came out to support the players and we hope to see more people at the next Division 1 game which is against Longford Slashers in Michael Fay Park next Friday @ 5.30pm.
