Abbeylara Scór Club
Abbeylara GAA Club has been involved with Scór for many years. Stalwarts of the club such as Patsy Lynch, Nellie and Paddy Reilly, John Fay, Marett Smith, Terry Drake and Patrica Mahon nurtured the cultural aspect of the club which was Scór. Many past and present members of the club will have happy memories of the old hall in Abbeylara and the then pre-fab, where the club practiced diligently for the various competitions, from Figure Dancing, Ballad Group, Set Dancing, Novelty Act, Solo Dancing, Recitation and Solo Sagging.
The Club had one All Ireland Winner in Solo Singing, when Catherine McGirr nee Lynch brought home the honours and the Parish was truly proud of her. The Ballad group of that time also made it to the All Ireland ( Olive Kilbane, Patsy Lynch and Co. They were narrowly beaten into second place, a great achievement all the same. We have had much success down through the years both at Scor na nÓg and Scór Sinsir. The Club’s Scór Set Dancing team who started their training at 10 years of age have progressed to Senior Scór and reached the Leinster Finals on many occasions. Ciaran and Evelyn Drake, Mark and Emer Sheridan, Jane, Christine and Eugene Lynch, Paul Brady and Peter and Lorna Smith, Dearbhla Reynolds, Niamh Smyth, Elaıne Rabbıt and many others. It is so gratifying to see these dancers get together to dance the Cavan Set at their various weddings from Ireland to Germany.
Scór is being kept alive in the Parish at Senior level but there is a big need for Scór na nÓg participants. Scór has so much to offer our youth in terms of keeping our culture alive. Its not all about winning, we have suffered defeat on many occasions but the fun and comraderie while practicing for the various competitions cannot be surpassed. It would be unfortunate not to give the same opportunity to our children and grandchildren. Anybody interested in getting involved can contact Patrica Mahon, Marett Smith or Annette Drake.
